Wildfire Preparedness:
Be Ready Before You Need To Be
As wildfire season continues across Eagle County, now is the time to prepare before an emergency occurs.
Wildfires can develop quickly, and the actions taken before an incident often make the biggest difference in protecting your family, pets, and property. Eagle Valley Wildland encourages all residents and visitors to take a few simple steps now to ensure they are prepared should an evacuation become necessary.
First, make sure you are signed up for emergency notifications through EC Alerts and download the Genasys Protect app. These systems provide important information including evacuation notices, road closures, wildfire updates, and other emergency information.
Second, prepare a "Go Bag" for every member of your household. Your Go Bag should include:
• Water and nonperishable food
• Prescription medications and medical information
• Identification and important documents
• Cell phone chargers
• First aid supplies
• A change of clothing
• Cash and spare keys
• Pet supplies if applicable
Having these items ready before an emergency can save valuable time when every minute matters.
In the event of a wildfire, residents should plan to use their primary evacuation route unless directed otherwise by emergency personnel. Conditions can change rapidly during a wildfire, and following evacuation instructions early helps keep routes safe and accessible for everyone.
If an evacuation becomes necessary:
• Close all windows and doors
• Move vehicles into the garage facing outward
• Leave your front door unlocked for firefighter access
• Remove propane tanks from grills
• Move combustible items away from your home
• Leave a garden hose connected if available
Wildfire preparedness starts long before smoke is visible. Taking a few simple steps today can make a significant difference during an emergency.
Thank you for helping keep Eagle County safe and resilient.
